Medstar Health Monday - Week 14

Game Day Snacks

Fueling up properly before taking the field or court takes knowledge and preparation. Oftentimes, young athletes find
themselves at a local fast food restaurant, or the concession stand before games. An hour later, fueled by pizza, hot
dogs, honey buns, and french-fries, they are ready to play. At least that’s what they think. Ideally, pre-game meals
should be consumed 2-3 hours before a contest. Having a snack an hour before is also a great idea. However, many
athletes are unable and/or unwilling to adhere to such a strict schedule. So, for the sake of being realistic, we will focus
more on pre-game snack options:

- Should be easily digestible (avoid fried/high fat food)
- Should be familiar foods
- Should be carbohydrate based
- Avoid sweet foods such as soda and candy
- Should be able to stay fresh without refrigeration

Pre-Game Snack Ideas

- Bagel w/ peanut butter
- Trail mix
- Turkey sandwich
- Protein/Granola Bar
- Popcorn
- Fresh fruit
- Energy chews
- Pretzels
