Exciting News: Danny Kelly Appointed Boys Director of Coaching
Baltimore Union SC Names Former Baltimore Blast Coach and MISL Coach of the Year Danny Kelly as Boys Director of Coaching
Baltimore Union SC is proud to announce that Danny Kelly has officially joined the club as its new Boys Director of Coaching, bringing one of the most accomplished résumés in the Region to Union’s leadership team.
Kelly, a longtime professional player and championship-winning coach, is widely known for his leadership, teaching ability, and high-level understanding of the game. A three-time league All-Star and 2008–09 MISL Coach of the Year, Danny led the Baltimore Blast to seven professional indoor championships during his 14-year coaching tenure, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful coaches in U.S. indoor soccer history.
“Danny is, at his core, a teacher,” said Frank Assaro, Executive Director of Baltimore Union SC. “His coaching style is rooted in fundamentals, attention to detail, and a commitment to doing the ‘little things’ right. That philosophy aligns perfectly with our club values. Our coaches will learn a great deal from Danny and our players will benefit as a result.”
A former standout at Penn State University, where he was a four-year letter winner from 1987 to 1990, Kelly still holds program records including for single-season assists. His college career earned him national recognition and laid the foundation for a long professional run.
Kelly’s playing career included stints with the Harrisburg Heat, San Diego Sockers, Rochester Rhinos, Hershey Wildcats, and Baltimore Blast, where he logged over 220 appearances and more than 100 goals. He also represented the U.S. National Futsal Team, bringing international experience to his coaching pedigree.
He began his professional playing career in 1991 as the first-ever draft pick of the Harrisburg Heat, where he would become fifth all-time in team points. He later joined the Baltimore Blast in 1999, and by the time he retired from playing in 2006, he ranked sixth on the Blast’s all-time scoring list and 20th on the league’s all-time scoring list.
After being named interim player-coach in 2006, Kelly transitioned to full-time head coach of the Baltimore Blast. Over the next 14 years, he would lead the team through the MISL and MASL, setting the standard for professionalism, team culture, and consistent success.
Outside of the pro arena, Kelly made a deep impact on the youth game, including his time with Baltimore Bays Chelsea, where he coached one of the region’s top teams. That group included his son Keegan Kelly, who advanced to the U.S. U17 National Residency Program and later played for the University of Maryland.
“Danny and I go back to when we competed against each other in our college playing days,” said Frank Assaro. “Even back then, he stood out as a high-IQ player with a relentless work rate. He’s carried those same qualities throughout his coaching career, and we’re excited to have someone of his caliber and character leading our boys program.”
Currently, Danny also serves as a Forensic Science teacher at Archbishop Curley High School, where he is pursuing his teaching certification through the State of Maryland. His dual role as a coach and educator underscores his passion for mentorship and developing young people both on and off the field.
While he will not be coaching individual teams, Kelly’s influence will extend across all age groups at Baltimore Union SC by shaping coaching standards, implementing player development structures, and creating a lasting impact on the club’s culture.
Danny Kelly commented on his recent appointment:
“Really excited to be named the Boys Director of Coaching for Baltimore Union. I look forward to using my experience as a youth soccer coach, professional player and as a professional coach to give back to a soccer community that has given me so much. My goal is to help make Baltimore Union become a true leader in terms of player and coaching development.”
With the addition of Danny Kelly, Baltimore Union SC reinforces its commitment to delivering high level coaching, leadership, and mentorship to its players, families, and coaching staff.
